Mouton-Rothschild is famous on so many different levels. From the different artists’ work that adorn each vintage label release, to the exuberant character of the late Baroness Philippine de Rothschild and her father Philippe, to its place in the Bordeaux hierarchy and of course to the utterly wonderful wine it makes.

Originally known as Château Brane-Mouton, it was renamed by Nathaniel de Rothschild in 1853 when he purchased it. Just two years later the great classification of Bordeaux for the Exposition Universelle in Paris was created. Nathaniel had begun a series of sweeping changes to improve the property and its wines and recapture the status for which they had been noted for centuries. But the changes weren’t complete when in 1855 the Médoc classification awarded Mouton-Rothschild status as Deuxième Grand Cru Classé. This lead to a long battle to have Mouton recognised for its true worth, which was finally achieved in 1973 by Baron Philippe de Rothschild. The wine was elevated, the first and only change to the classification ever made. The label of 1973 reads: ‘Premier je suis. Second je fus. Mouton ne change’ – ‘First, I am. Second, I used to be. Mouton does not change’. Fittingly, somehow, 1973 was the year of Picasso’s death, and so it is his painting that adorns this ever-so famous label.

Although Mouton means ‘sheep’, and the property and its wine label is flamboyantly endowed with a great deal of ram and sheep motifs, the word actually came from ‘small hill’. It is this hill that provides the perfect exposure to the sun for the vines to create the bottled-magic that is Mouton Rothschild.

Each year's labels were designed by a famous artist of the time, Motherwell, Warhol, Setsuko and Francis Bacon to name a few. In 2008 Chateau Mouton Rothschild chose a Chinese artist, Xu Lei in order to capitalise on its popularity with the Asian wine lovers since the number 8 is considered extremely lucky in Chinese culture.

Bordeaux, in het zuidwesten van Frankrijk, behoeft weinig introductie als een van 's werelds beroemdste, meest prestigieuze en meest productieve wijnregio's. De meerderheid van de Bordeauxwijnen (bijna 90 procent van het productievolume) zijn de droge, medium- en volle rode Bordeaux Blends die zijn reputatie hebben gevestigd.

De beste (en duurste) hiervan zijn de wijnen van de grote châteaux van de Haut-Médoc en de Right Bank appellations Saint-Émilion en Pomerol. De eerste is gericht (op het hoogste niveau) op Cabernet Sauvignon, de laatste paart op Merlot.

De legendarische rode wijnen worden aangevuld met hoogwaardige witte wijnen op basis van Sémillon en Sauvignon Blanc. Deze variëren van droge witte wijnen die de beste wijnen uit de Bourgogne (Pessac-Léognan is met name beroemd) uitdagen tot de zoete, botrytische nectars van Sauternes.

Pauillac is een prestigieuze wijnappellation gelegen aan de linkeroever van de Bordeauxregio in het zuidwesten van Frankrijk. Gelegen langs het Gironde-estuarium ongeveer 50 kilometer ten noorden van de stad Bordeaux, omvat deze gemeente ongeveer 1.200 hectare wijngaarden. De appellation werd in 1936 opgericht onder het AOC-systeem van Frankrijk en herbergt drie van Bordeaux' vijf First Growth-landgoederen: Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Latour en Château Mouton Rothschild.

Het terroir van Pauillac wordt gekarakteriseerd door diepe grindbedden gemengd met zand en klei, in millennia afgezet door het Gironde-estuarium. Deze goed drainerende bodemsamenstelling, gecombineerd met het door de nabijgelegen Atlantische Oceaan gematigde maritieme klimaat, creëert ideale omstandigheden voor Cabernet Sauvignon, die hier doorgaans blends domineert. Merlot en Cabernet Franc dienen als complementaire variëteiten, met kleine hoeveelheden Petit Verdot en Malbec ook toegestaan. De appellation produceert uitsluitend rode wijnen, met veel châteaux die traditionele Bordeaux-wijnmaaktechnieken gebruiken, inclusief rijping in eiken vaten.

Pauillac-wijnen staan bekend om hun kracht, structuur en uitzonderlijke ouderingspotentieel. Het hoge percentage Cabernet Sauvignon draagt intense cassis- en zwarte-bes-smaken bij, ondersteund door stevige tannines en opmerkelijke concentratie. Deze wijnen vertonen doorgaans ceder-, tabaks- en grafietnotenties die met de leeftijd ontwikkelen, en vereisen vaak een decennium of meer om volledige rijpheid te bereiken. De combinatie van grindhoudende bodems en vakkundig wijnmaken produceert wijnen met opmerkelijke diepte en complexiteit die tientallen jaren elegant kunnen evolueren.
