Composed of 53% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot, the 2017 Alter Ego de Palmer is deep garnet-purple in color and springs from the glass with vivacious black raspberries, black cherries and crushed blackcurrants notes plus hints of Sichuan pepper, menthol, pencil lead and cardamom. Medium-bodied, the palate is charged with energy, featuring expressive, bright black fruits and firm, fine-grained tannins, finishing long and lively.
Blended of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 12% Petit Verdot, the deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Alter Ego de Palmer opens with beautifully expressive notes of black cherries, fresh blackberries and redcurrants plus suggestions of menthol, dark chocolate, cloves and underbrush. Medium to full-bodied with a rich mid-palate and stacks of exuberant black and red fruits, it has a velvety texture and fantastically long finish.
Composed of 52% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot, the 2015 Alter Ego de Palmer has a medium to deep garnet-purple color and gorgeous nose of ripe plums, cassis and crushed cherries with touches of incense, lavender and chocolate box. Medium-bodied, very finely crafted and vivacious in the mouth, it finishes with great elegance and finesse.
The Alter Ego de Palmer 2014 is a blend of 52% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Petit Verdot. It has an opulent, glossy bouquet with layers of small dark cherries and plenty of glycerin. The palate is more reserved than the bouquet suggests: saturated tannins, a little chewiness on the entry but suppler towards the finish. It feels very linear in keeping with the style of the vintage, the finish a little sweet than its peers with a dab of licorice on the aftertaste.
The second wine, the 2013 Alter Ego de Palmer (7,500 cases produced), is composed of 46% Merlot, 46% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Petit Verdot. It reveals more acidity as well as a more lean, austere character in addition to a deep ruby/purple color. The tannins and tart acids are noticeable. It should be consumed over the next 3-6 years. Palmer’s administrator, Thomas Duroux, realized that 2013 was going to be a year requiring huge amounts of labor and a draconian-like selection. Only 3,800 cases of 2013 Palmer were produced from a blend of 49% Merlot and 51% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Another brilliant example from administrator Thomas Duroux and his team, the intense second wine, Palmer’s 2012 Alter Ego (51% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Petit Verdot), offers up plenty of blackberry and crème de cassis notes along with some spring flowers, licorice and subtle background oak. Opulently textured, full-bodied and stunning, this is an outrageously successful second wine to drink over the next 12-15 years.
Deep garnet in color, the 2010 Alter Ego de Palmer rolls out of the glass with crème de cassis, stewed plums and mocha scents followed by fried herbs, tilled soil and cedar chest. Full-bodied, the palate has a solid structure of chewy tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing just a tad firm.
A second wine that has improved dramatically is the Alter Ego de Palmer. The 2009, a blend of equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, exhibits aromas of blackberries, cassis, chocolate, roasted espresso and a smoky/foresty note. This hedonistic, juicy, succulent Margaux is meant to be consumed in its first 10-15 years of life.

The history of Chateau Palmer dates back to the 18th century when the Gasq family, a very old family of Bordeaux parliamentarians, ensured the reputation of its wines. In 1814 the property and sold it to the English general Charles Palmer who triples the size of the vineyard and puts himself in serious financial difficulties which forced him to part with the estate now known by his name since the 1830s. The brothers Isaac and Emile Peireire, influential bankers, bought Palmer in 1853, shortly before its classification as a 3rd cru in 1855.

1938 a group of 4 large international families of Bordeaux merchants bought Palmer, the Ginestets, Mihailhe, Mähler-Besse and Sichel. These last two families are now the owners.

The estate produces 2 AOC Margaux wines: Château Palmer and, since 1998, a "great" second wine, Alter Ego.
