Gevrey-Chambertin is a village appellation in the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy, located in northeastern France. The commune encompasses both village-level wines and Premier Cru designations, which represent specific vineyard sites within the appellation. The village gained its hyphenated name in the 19th century by adding "Chambertin" — one of its most prestigious vineyard parcels — to its original name of Gevrey.
The appellation's vineyards sit on east-facing slopes with a limestone-rich substrate typical of the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin produces exclusively Pinot Noir under Burgundian regulations, with winemaking focused on expressing the subtle variations between individual vineyard sites rather than blending across large areas. The region's continental climate, with morning sun exposure and afternoon protection, creates conditions suited to Pinot Noir's ripening requirements.
Gevrey-Chambertin wines are characterized by black cherry and dark red fruit aromatics, often with earthy undertones and spice notes that develop with bottle age. The wines typically display moderate to firm tannin structure and acidity that supports aging potential. Premier Cru bottlings from the appellation show greater complexity and concentration than village-level examples, with individual vineyard expressions influenced by subtle variations in slope exposure and soil composition.
