Deep purple-black in the glass, this Cornas opens with intense aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and crushed violets, layered with cracked black pepper, smoked meat and wet stone. The palate is full-bodied yet finely focused, with dark plum and cassis fruit framed by firm, polished tannins and vibrant acidity. Savory notes of olive tapenade, graphite and iron emerge with air. The finish is long and mineral, with lingering spice and a fresh, granitic edge.

About this wine
Philippe Pacalet's Cornas is a red from the northern Rhône, made entirely from Syrah, as the appellation requires. Cornas lies on steep, granite-based slopes on the right bank of the river, and it is among the most structured expressions of the grape in France.
Expect the appellation's dark, savoury profile: blackberry and cassis, black pepper, smoked meat and a mineral edge, with firm tannins that reward decanting. It suits the galley's richer dishes: roast beef, lamb, venison, game birds and well-roasted poultry.
