Tasting notes

This historic wine is something of a benchmark for Southern Italy, and it certainly is for the Vulture wine region of Basilicata. The 2016 Aglianico del Vulture Don Anselmo shows good balance and a dark bouquet with ensuing aromas of blackberry, black currant, spice, smoke and tar. It displays the power, determination and elegance of volcanic winemaking. The finish is restrained and compact.

About this wine

Paternoster's Don Anselmo is a refined expression of Aglianico del Vulture DOCG, sourced from the volcanic slopes of Basilicata in southern Italy. The Aglianico grape thrives in this distinctive terroir, where rich volcanic soils and altitude create the perfect conditions for producing elegant, age-worthy red wines with remarkable structure and complexity.

This wine embodies a balanced, sophisticated style characteristic of quality Aglianico producers like Tommasi. Expect a wine of light to medium intensity, with black fruit, spicy, and smoky characteristics that reflect both the grape variety and the region's unique volcanic character. The wine's elegance and restraint make it exceptionally versatile at the table.

Pair Don Anselmo with a range of cuisines: from rich meats like lamb, beef, and venison to more delicate preparations of duck and oily fish. It also complements aged cheeses such as Manchego and Gruyère, charcuterie, cured meats, and dishes featuring fresh herbs and grilled vegetables. An ideal choice for fine dining settings, private estates, and discerning collectors seeking authentic Italian red wine.
