Tasting notes

A whiff of bubblegum on the nose comes off this young, light whisky. It's light on the palate, with notes of lemon zest, marshmallow, and strawberry, with a bright acidity. The finish fades quickly, leaving just a hint of malt. For the price many Japanese whiskeys are fetching now, it may leave one wanting more.

About this whisky

Matsui Shuzo is a Japanese distillery that has been producing high-quality spirits for over a century. The Kurayoshi Sherry Cask Pure Malt is one of their most popular offerings, and for good reason.

The history of Matsui Shuzo dates back to 1910, when the company was founded in Tottori Prefecture, Japan. Since then, they have been dedicated to producing premium spirits using traditional Japanese techniques and the finest ingredients.

The Kurayoshi Sherry Cask Pure Malt is a prime example of Matsui Shuzo's commitment to quality. This whisky is made using a blend of malt whiskies from Scotland and Japan, which are then aged in sherry casks for a minimum of three years. The result is a rich, complex whisky with notes of dried fruit, caramel, and oak.

Matsui Shuzo takes great care in the production of their spirits, using only the best ingredients and traditional techniques. The Kurayoshi Sherry Cask Pure Malt is a testament to their dedication to quality and craftsmanship. With its unique flavor profile and long aging process, it is no wonder why this whisky is so popular.

The Kurayoshi Reverie

Ingredients

  • 45 ml Matsui Shuzo - The Kurayoshi - Sherry Cask Pure Malt
  • 20 ml Amontillado Sherry
  • 15 ml Crème de Cacao (dark)
  • 10 ml Fresh Lemon Juice
  • 8 ml Honey Syrup (1:1 ratio)
  • 2 dashes Angostura Bitters
  • 1 dash Orange Bitters

Method

  1. Fill a mixing glass with ice cubes
  2. Add the Kurayoshi whisky, Amontillado Sherry, crème de cacao, fresh lemon juice, and honey syrup
  3. Add both dashes of Angostura bitters and orange bitters
  4. Stir continuously for 12-15 seconds until the mixing glass becomes frosted
  5. Strain into a chilled coupe glass using a fine strainer
  6. Taste and adjust if necessary before serving

Serve

Serve in a chilled coupe glass. Garnish with a single, thin strip of candied orange peel (approximately 5cm long) placed delicately across the rim. Express the oils from a fresh orange twist over the drink surface before discarding. The drink should be served immediately while properly chilled, with the surface of the cocktail undisturbed to showcase its deep amber hue.
