About this absinthe

Nouvelle Orleans Superieure is an absinthe from Jade Liqueurs, the label of Ted Breaux, made in France and bottled at a full 68% ABV. The name looks to New Orleans, the city of the Sazerac.

At this strength, absinthe is made for dilution. Expect the category's anise and fennel lead with a bitter wormwood edge, turning cloudy as iced water is dripped in. Serve it as a slow aperitif ritual at the bar, or use a small measure to rinse the glass for a Sazerac or a Corpse Reviver No. 2.

The Nouvelle Orleans Sazerac

Ingredients

  • 60 ml Jade Liqueurs Nouvelle Orleans Superieure Absinthe
  • 90 ml rye whiskey
  • 2 dashes Peychaud's bitters
  • 1 dash Angostura bitters
  • 1 sugar cube
  • 5 ml water

Method

  1. Rinse a rocks glass with absinthe, coating the interior thoroughly, then discard the excess.
  2. Place the sugar cube in a mixing glass and add both bitters and water.
  3. Muddle gently until the sugar dissolves.
  4. Add the rye whiskey and fill the mixing glass with ice.
  5. Stir for 30 seconds until properly chilled.
  6. Strain into the absinthe-rinsed rocks glass over a large ice cube.
  7. Express the oils from a lemon twist over the surface.

Serve

Rocks glass, lemon twist expressed over the drink and placed on the rim, no ice needed as glass is pre-chilled.
