Fonseca is a Port producer based in the Douro region of Portugal, one of the world's oldest demarcated wine regions. The house specializes in Port wines, the fortified wines that have defined Portuguese viticulture since the 17th century. Fonseca's operations center on the production and aging of these fortified wines, drawing from vineyards and reserves in the Douro Valley.

The Douro region is characterized by steep, terraced vineyards carved into schist slopes, where hot, dry summers and cold winters create conditions ideal for cultivating the Portuguese red grape varieties that form the backbone of Port production. Port itself is defined by its fortification process—adding brandy to halt fermentation—which preserves residual sugar and creates wines of weight, complexity, and aging potential.
