Immediately impressive upfront, the nose of the 2017 Black Label Pinotage is open and expressive. The opaque core has deep purple edges, and the fruit is concentrated with the oak. The dense and chewy fruit expresses the full array of blue, black and dark red tones—dark plum, blackberry, black cherry with hints of blueberry fill the nose of the glass. On the palate, the fruit has a depth and breadth that is complex and gives pleasure. This is an impressive Pinotage bottling. The mid-palate is rich, full-bodied and is highly complex, while the finish is still youthful and has a firm tannic grip that will ensure this wine lasts for decades. Wow! This full-bodied wine ends with a long and highly complex finish with notes of dark chocolate. It is an impressive wine that will captivate your attention.
The nose of the 2016 Kadette Pinotage is black fruited with an herbal and black spice edge, with soft hints of oak and juicy plums. The medium to full-bodied palate is plush with an open core of fruit, lingering oak on the back end and subtle herbs and spices, with a decent, spicy finish.
The 2014 Black Label Pinotage has a well-defined bouquet with lovely cranberry and loganberry fruit, sage and a freshly tilled earth. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin, a cooler and more masculine Black Label with a sense of reserve towards the finish, as if holding something back. There is plenty of freshness here, long in the mouth, but I would cellar this away for 4-5 years, because I am sure it will develop, rewarding secondary notes and flavors. Just 5,000 bottles produced.
The nose is cleaner and purer than the Cape Blend, with quite lush, macerated black cherries, blackberry and cedar fruit, quite reserved but nicely focused. The palate is well-balanced with slightly furry tannins. There is good depth of fruit here and well-judged acidity, with pleasant black pepper notes toward the finish.
A delightful and juicy wine, the 2021 Pinotage offers a ripe and fleshy expression of black raspberry, spiced plums and dark cherry skin with elegant oak spices and dusty florals with a soft, lingering potpourri essence. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is fresh and red-fruited with succulent acidity and fine-grained tannins that lift the mid-palate while displaying plenty of toasted oak essence. This Pinotage is gorgeous as it offers layers of attractive fruit and oak before gliding to a graceful, food-friendly finish. While it's still primary, this will undoubtedly improve with additional bottle age.

Onshore Cellars - ICONIQUE Producteur

Kanonkop Estate is situated on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain in the Stellenbosch Region of the Cape and confidently boasts with some of South Africa’s most premium wines.

Kanonkop is a fourth generation family estate, which was originally purchased by JW Sauer, a cabinet member in the parliament of the Union of South Africa. This estate has since then been handed down from father to son forover 40 years and is now in the talented, capable hands of its current owners Paul & Johann Krige.

The name Kanonkop was derived from a kopje (hillock), from which a cannon was fired in the 17th Century to alert farmers in outlying areas that sailing ships plying the waters between Europe and the Far East had entered Table Bay for a stopover at Cape Town.

Stellenbosch is a wine region located in the Western Cape province of South Africa. It is one of the oldest wine regions in the country, with a history dating back to the 17th century. The region is known for its diverse terroir, which includes a range of soil types and microclimates that are ideal for growing a variety of grape varietals.

The wines produced in Stellenbosch are known for their bold, full-bodied flavors and complex aromas. The region is particularly well-known for its red wines, which are made from varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Pinotage. These wines are often aged in oak barrels, which adds a layer of complexity to their flavor profile.

In addition to red wines, Stellenbosch also produces a range of white wines, including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chenin Blanc. These wines are known for their crisp acidity and bright fruit flavors, and are often aged in stainless steel tanks to preserve their freshness.

Overall, Stellenbosch is a region that is steeped in history and tradition, and its wines are a testament to the skill and expertise of its winemakers. Whether you are a seasoned wine connoisseur or a casual enthusiast, a bottle of wine from Stellenbosch is sure to impress.
