Castello Banfi is a wine estate located in Tuscany's Brunello di Montalcino DOCG zone, one of Italy's most celebrated wine regions. The estate produces wines from vineyards situated in the hills surrounding the medieval town of Montalcino, where the unique combination of soil, elevation, and climate creates ideal conditions for Sangiovese cultivation.

The Brunello di Montalcino appellation requires wines to be made entirely from Sangiovese grapes and aged for a minimum of five years before release, including at least two years in oak. This extended aging process develops the wine's characteristic complexity, with notes of cherry, leather, and earth, along with firm tannins that allow for decades of cellaring. The region's galestro and alberese soils, combined with significant diurnal temperature variation, contribute to the wines' distinctive structure and longevity.

Castello Banfi's current production focuses on traditional Brunello di Montalcino, crafted from 100% Sangiovese grapes. Their approach reflects the appellation's strict standards and the estate's commitment to expressing the terroir of this renowned Tuscan wine zone.

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG ligt in de heuvels rond de middeleeuwse stad Montalcino in Zuid-Toscane, Italië. De benaming kreeg in 1980 de DOCG-status, wat erkent dat het een van de belangrijkste wijnregio's van Italië is. Het gebied omvat ongeveer 3.200 hectare wijngaarden op hellingen op hoogtes tussen 150 en 500 meter boven zeeniveau.

Het terroir van de regio combineert een mediterraan klimaat met diverse bodemtypen, waaronder galestro, alberese-kalksteen en kleirijke marl. Brunello di Montalcino moet uitsluitend uit Sangiovese-druiven worden gemaakt, plaatselijk bekend als Brunello. DOCG-regelgeving vereist een minimale rijpingsperiode van vijf jaar vóór uitgifte, met minstens twee jaar in eikenhouten vaten en vier maanden in fles. Brunello di Montalcino-wijnen worden gekenmerkt door hun kracht, levensduur en complexe smaakontwikkeling. De wijnen vertonen doorgaans intense robijn tot granaat kleuren en bieden aroma's van donkere kers, leer, tabak en kruiden. In de mond presenteren ze gestructureerde tannines, levendige zuurgraad en smaken van rood fruit, aarde en specerijen. De beste voorbeelden kunnen graceeus tientallen jaren rijpen en tertiaire noten van gedroogde bloemen, paddenstoel en bosbodem ontwikkelen, terwijl ze hun karakteristieke Sangiovese-karakter behouden.
