Grenache

Grenache originated in the Aragon region of northeastern Spain, where it is known as Garnacha. The variety spread throughout the Mediterranean basin centuries ago, finding particular success in southern France, Sardinia, and eventually Australia. It thrives in hot, dry climates with poor soils, developing concentrated flavors under intense sunlight while maintaining good acidity levels.

Grenache produces wines with characteristic red berry and stone fruit flavors, often displaying notes of strawberry, raspberry, and white pepper. The grape tends to ripen early and can achieve high alcohol levels, contributing to full-bodied wines with soft tannins. In rosé production, it provides fresh fruit character and structural backbone, while red wines typically show jammy fruit qualities with herbal undertones.

The variety reaches particular distinction in France's Rhône Valley, where it forms the foundation of Châteauneuf-du-Pape blends, and in Provence, where it contributes significantly to the region's pale rosé wines. In Spain's Priorat, old-vine Garnacha produces intense, mineral-driven reds, while Australia's Barossa Valley showcases the grape in both traditional and modern styles. Grenache-based wines pair well with Mediterranean cuisine, grilled meats, and herb-crusted dishes.
