The 2017 Ermitage Ex Voto is sturdy, rich and intense, even for Hermitage. Crushed stone and plum notes mark the nose, while the full-bodied palate is tannic and dusty in feel, ending on additional notes of crushed stone, pencil shavings and cassis. Give it a few more years in the cellar and drink it over the next decade or so.

Like previous vintages, the 2019 Ermitage Ex Voto originates from estate parcels in Les Bessards (30%), Les Greffieux (30%), Les Murets (20%) and L'Hermite (20%). Hugely dark and concentrated in hue, it offers up hints of crushed stone and roasted plum, plus grilled meat. Full-bodied and rich, yet also mouthwatering on the finish, it's a solid effort, but it looks to be a step behind the 2018 at this stage.

The 2012 Hermitage Ex Voto (which I suspect won’t be produced again until 2015) was bottled in January of this year and it’s a big, voluptuous beauty that’s loaded with fruit and texture. Crème de cassis, black raspberries, crushed rocks and a touch of beef blood all soar from the glass of this beauty, which hits the palate with a wealth of sweet fruit, building, ripe tannin and blockbuster length. Liquid Viagra would suffice as a descriptor for this wine, and while it’s already impossible to resist today, it will age effortlessly for 25 or more years.

More voluptuous and extroverted than the '10, with an undeniably sexy, full-bodied, massively concentrated personality that just begs to be drunk, it will still evolve for decades on its sheer wealth of material.

Nella Valle del Rodano si produce vino da oltre 500 anni, con alcuni dei suoi vigneti tra i più antichi di Francia. Il Syrah domina il sud con un mix di uve mediterranee, mentre a nord le due stelle sono l'Hermitage – coltivato su un'imponente collina di granito sopra la città di Tain e meglio conservato nel retro della cantina per un decennio – e la Côte-Rôtie, una denominazione stellata resa famosa dai vini monovitigno di Guigal, ma anche sede di decine di ottimi produttori ancora meno noti. Le colline a strapiombo che si affacciano sul fiume devono essere terrazzate per rendere possibile la produzione.

Anche St Joseph e Cornas forniscono vini di peso e di valore, ma la migliore fonte di buon rapporto qualità-prezzo è Crozes-Hermitage, una denominazione satellite che si è animata negli ultimi anni con l'arrivo di sangue giovane.

La valle del fiume si allarga a sud di Valence nella regione delle Côtes du Rhône sulle pianure alluvionali ventose e sulle pendici più basse delle colline. I migliori villaggi vinicoli delle Côtes du Rhône sono stati promossi alle proprie denominazioni - Vinsobres, Vacqueyras - vicine in qualità alle più note Gigondas.

Il re del Rodano meridionale è Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Qui i galets roulés, rocce arrotondate dell'antico letto del fiume, fanno da cornice a vini rossi gloriosamente ricchi, che ricordano il caldo e le erbe del sud, ed esaltati dalla complessità che deriva dall'assemblaggio di diversi vitigni.
