Ron Zacapa is a Guatemalan rum producer based in the highlands of Guatemala, specifically distilled at an altitude of 2,300 meters above sea level in Quetzaltenango. The company produces premium aged rums using a solera aging system, which involves blending rums of different ages in a cascading barrel system originally developed for sherry production.

The distillery utilizes virgin sugar cane honey rather than molasses as its base, which contributes to the rum's distinctive character. Guatemala's high-altitude location provides cooler temperatures that slow the aging process, allowing for more nuanced flavor development compared to rums aged at sea level. The volcanic soil and climate conditions of the Guatemalan highlands create an environment conducive to producing complex, smooth spirits.

The current range includes the Solera Gran Reserva No. 23, which represents a blend of rums aged between 6 and 23 years, alongside expressions like the Edition Negra and XO bottlings. These dark rums showcase the solera method's ability to create consistent complexity through the marriage of different aged components, resulting in spirits with rich, layered profiles typical of premium Central American rum production.
