Once again, the 2008 Blanc de Blancs Clos du Mesnil is performing well today. Offering up a complex, dense and delicately spicy bouquet of citrus oil, hazelnuts, marzipan, pastry, ripe apricot and confit citrus, it's full-bodied, perfectly balanced and layered, with a crystalline, chiselled texture framed by racy acids, leading to a long, mineral and lovely iodine-inflected finish. Despite its austerity and structure, this Chardonnay, entirely sourced from Mesnil-sur-Oger, possesses a charming character that promises to age gracefully for 20-30 years.
Slated for release later this year, Krug's 2006 Blanc de Blancs Clos du Mesnil unwinds in the glass with aromas of buttered citrus fruit, crisp green pear, warm pastry, freshly baked bread, apricot and liquorice. Full-bodied, layered and concentrated, the 2006's comparatively extroverted and gourmand bouquet is in contrast to its deep, chiselled and tightly wound palate, and it's here that the site dominates the vintage signature. Long, sapid and penetrating, complemented by a pillowy pinpoint mousse, this is a brilliant Blanc de Blancs that has been well worth the wait. By the standards of young Clos du Mesnil, it's already quite approachable and can already be drunk with considerable satisfaction.
Krug's beautifully citrus coloured 2004 Blanc de Blancs Brut Clos du Mesnil shows a deep, complex, very clear and precise if not ethereal bouquet with citrus aromas intertwined with chalk and noble brioche notes in the background. Pure, profound and vibrantly fresh on the palate, this is a straight, athletic, very intense and expressive yet highly elegant and finessed Clos du Mesnil with a unique fresh fruit character! The 2004 reveals a great mineral structure and chalky texture on the palate. The highly complex, energetic finish reveals bracing freshness and vitality as well as the charm and creaminess from the vinification in barrels and possibly the dosage wine that seems to boost the Krug style. While terroir wine is the result of hands-off winemaking, Krug's Clos du Mesnil is perhaps a very particular Krug Champagne—it has great quality, style and complexity that is the result of the winemaking and the addition of the dosage wine.
Bright, pale golden yellow with silver reflections and a very delicate, fine, bubbly mousse. Opens with smoky, nutty savouriness, hints of orange and bergamot zest, underpinned by white peach, apple and pineapple. It is precise, has a well-matured bouquet with some walnut and almond. Taut, fine ripe yellow fruit nuances, some yellow plum and subtle blossom honey. The acidity is well integrated, it has finesse and elegance, is juicy, with fine fruit expression on the finish. It is mineral, ripe, with a touch of apricot but also white fruit on the back palate. The wine has reached initial drinking age, and has definite further ageing potential.

Krug’s 2000 Brut Blanc de Blancs Clos du Mesnil represents the latest release of this now extraordinarily expensive bottling from a 4.5-acre enclave that the house has made legendary since dedicated bottlings began in 1979. Unlike Krug’s “regular” Vintage Brut, this cuvée is declared nearly every year. The wine presents a striking aromatic profile, evoking sea breeze along with oyster and mussel shells, closely mirroring the initial impression of Krug’s standard 2000 vintage bottling. However, in this case, notes of gingerbread, candied lemon rind, vanilla, and heliotrope emerge beyond the maritime influence, hinting at the ripeness and mineral transparency that define the palate. On the palate, this Champagne is infectiously juicy and texturally ultra-refined, with an intricate interplay of maritime mineral, citrus, floral, and spice elements that unfold with subtlety and impressive persistence. At this stage, it remains somewhat youthfully austere, likely requiring another year or two before fully revealing its complexity. Nevertheless, there is little doubt that this vintage was dealt a fortunate hand by nature, and it should continue to evolve beautifully over the next 12 to 15 years.
The 1998 Brut Blanc de Blancs Clos du Mesnil has evolved beautifully since it was last tasted. This particular bottle showcases remarkable tautness and focus, displaying great energy and minerality in its precise, crystalline fruit. While the 1998 vintage may not be among the longest-lived Clos du Mesnils, if this bottle is any indication, it should continue to offer an excellent drinking experience for years to come.
Krug’s 1996 Brut Blanc de Blancs Clos du Mesnil once again confirms its status as one of the greatest Champagnes of this historic vintage. Tasted multiple times over the past year, it has consistently delivered a breathtaking experience, and this occasion is no exception. The wine sparkles on the palate with a brilliant, pointillist expression of fruit, displaying remarkable detail, depth, and refinement. Much like a finely cut gem, each sip reveals a different and unique shade of nuance. The 1996 Clos du Mesnil envelops every inch of the palate with endless layers of perfumed fruit, culminating in a chiselled, mineral-driven finish that lingers indefinitely. In this particular bottle, the oak presence appears slightly more pronounced—an element not previously observed in this wine. However, this does little to detract from its overall excellence. If limited to choosing just one Champagne, regardless of budget, this extraordinary bottling from Krug’s Clos du Mesnil might very well be the ultimate selection. This is Champagne at its most profound.
The 1995 Blanc de Blancs Clos du Mesnil is a beautiful, delicate, medium-bodied Champagne offering hints of flint, chalk, white peaches, honeyed grapefruit, and lemon zest. This beautiful Chardonnay tastes of liquid minerals and reeks of terroir. The mousse is exceptionally elegant.
The 1982 Clos du Mesnil is another pretty wine that is drinking beautifully today. It is the product of a vintage that produced a Clos du Mesnil with higher alcohol and lower acidity than is normally the case. To put that into perspective, the 1982 clocks in at just 6.5% acidity as compared to 9.45% for the 1988, which represents the other end of the spectrum. Still, it is amazing how much chalkiness and pure minerality comes through regardless. The 1982 is a pretty, complete Clos du Mesnil that shows the riper, open style of wine that this site is capable of in hotter years.

Joseph Krug had a vision, to create champagne every year regardless of variations in vintage. He felt the essence of champagne was pleasure and when he founded Krug in 1834 he worked tirelessly to pursue his dream. Joseph’s knowledge has been passed down through the family and as such his great great great grandson, Olivier Krug is the director today.

Interview with Olivier Krug, Director

As the sixth generation director, what do you feel was the most important moment in Krug’s history to date?

In my eyes, the most important day was, in 1842, the day when Joseph Krug, my great great great grandfather, decided to create his own house, producing solely Prestige and exceptional champagnes. His vision was that champagne is about pleasure so he decided to follow his dream, which was to offer every year, whatever the climatic challenges, the best and most generous expression of champagne. Not only did he achieve this but we are proud to share with you today Krug Grande Cuvée 165th Edition, the 165th time in a row that we have recreated his dream.

What is the idea behind the Krug ID?

The Krug ID allows every Krug Lover to get the story of her/his bottle. Not only does it give a direct access to all craft information but also lots of helpful advice on service (never use a flute nor serve it too cold), and pairings. Besides the obvious food pairings, I am especially enthusiastic with music pairings and I can confirm that the right music with the right champagne does enhance the spectrum of discoveries.

When did you first taste champagne?

I had Krug on my lips the day I was born, even before mother’s milk. Consequently, I must be the only one who forgot his first Krug.

In 1668, Dom Pérignon is said to have discovered how to make sparkling wine; today his technique is used the world over, although Champagne continues to make some of the finest. France’s most northerly wine region, Champagne is now home to 15,000 growers and 290 ‘houses’. A blend of grape varieties is usually required: white Chardonnay to add fruit and elegance, and two reds – Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier – to provide body and backbone.
