The headline wine from Rocca di Frassinello is this hearty blend of Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. It represents a selection of the best fruit from across the estate. The 2018 Maremma Toscana Rocca di Frassinello is a darkly concentrated expression with dark plum, bitter chocolate, spice, leather and cured tobacco. This is a very concentrated and savory expression that draws out the richness and the textural structure of your textbook Tuscan red
This wine has a very strong oak imprint. The 2019 Maremma Toscana Baffonero also shows a strong medicinal or green character with eucalyptus essence that could come from the Merlot, which often shows a minty character, or from the oak. Fermentation starts off in cement vats, and the wine ages in new barrique for 24 months. It's a lot to take in, and the powerful 15% alcohol content is hard to ignore. Baffonero shows inky thick concentration with residual heaviness, sweet brandy and stewed cherry. It exudes heaviness, concentration and oak tannins.

Rocca di Frassinello is a prestigious winery located in the Maremma region of Tuscany, Italy. Established as a collaboration between Italy's Castellare di Castellina and France's Domaines Barons de Rothschild-Château Lafite, the winery merges the finest traditions of Italian and French winemaking.

The estate spans approximately 500 hectares, with 83 hectares dedicated to vineyards. These vineyards cultivate a mix of Italian and French grape varieties, including Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and Vermentino, producing wines that reflect the harmony of both regions.

The winery itself, designed by renowned architect Renzo Piano, is celebrated for its modern design and functionality. A highlight is its subterranean barrel room, a striking amphitheatre-like space that naturally maintains perfect conditions for aging wine.

Rocca di Frassinello also celebrates history, housing an Etruscan museum with archaeological artifacts discovered on the estate, demonstrating a deep connection between the land and its heritage.

Known for wines of exceptional quality, such as the flagship "Rocca di Frassinello" blend and the iconic "Baffonero" Merlot, this winery stands as a symbol of innovation and tradition in Tuscany’s winemaking landscape.

Italy's most ancient wine region, Tuscany may not be a heavyweight in terms of quantity, but as the home of two of the country's most famous fine wines – Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino – it certainly holds its own in terms of quality. Tuscany's climate ranges from Mediterranean on the coast to continental deep in the Apennines. More than two thirds of the province is covered with hills, an important terroir factor in its fine wines.
