Pingus werd opgericht door de in Denemarken geboren Peter Sisseck. Zijn fascinatie voor wijn begon thuis bij zijn ouders en op 14-jarige leeftijd werd hij verder geïnspireerd door een bezoek aan zijn oom, de bekende wijnmaker Peter Vinding, in Bordeaux. Dit bezoek ontbrandde wat een levenslange passie zou worden.

In 1995 werd de eerste Pingus gebotteld. Zijn doel was om "een onmiskenbaar Spaanse, terroir-gedreven wijn... een garage wijn" te produceren. Dit was een enorm succes en voor het eerst werd een Spaanse wijn naar het podium van 's werelds beste wijnen getild, bekroond met 98 punten door de gerespecteerde Wine Advocate.

Pingus is het resultaat van 2 complementaire en uitzonderlijk goed uitgebalanceerde oude wijngaarden voor tempranillo - 'Barroso' van de kiezelzandige Duero-rivier en 'San Cristobal' op naar het westen gerichte kleihellingen.

Wat maakt Pingus 2014 zo bijzonder en wat maakt de structuur zo uniek? Denk je dat de oudere wijnstokken hier een grote rol in spelen?

De structuur van Pingus 2014 heeft natuurlijk te maken met de leeftijd van de wijnstokken, maar ook met het feit dat de wijn zwaar gehageld is. De 2014 is als een moderne versie van de jaargang 1995, de jaargang waarin we een van de beste wijnen ooit hebben gemaakt. De eerste met dezelfde complexe tanninestructuur, maar in een moderne versie.

Wat was voor jou het mooiste moment in de geschiedenis van de wijnmakerij?

We hebben veel mooie momenten in gedachten, maar het was misschien wel het gevoel dat we hadden toen Robert Parker de Pingus 1995 (vatmonster) 96 tot 100 punten gaf, een totaal onbekende wijn, die nog nooit eerder was gemaakt, staat nog steeds als baanbrekend.
