Herradura

Herradura is a Mexican tequila producer based in Jalisco, the heartland of tequila production. The distillery operates in the town of Amatitán, within the Tequila Denomination of Origin region where blue agave (Agave tequilana Weber var. azul) has been cultivated and distilled for centuries. Like all authentic tequila producers, Herradura must adhere to strict regulations governing production methods and geographic boundaries.

The company follows traditional tequila-making processes, harvesting mature agave plants that typically take 8-10 years to reach optimal sugar content. The piñas (agave hearts) are cooked in clay ovens, fermented, and double-distilled in copper pot stills. Jalisco's highland and lowland regions each impart distinct characteristics to tequila, with factors like soil composition, altitude, and climate affecting the agave's flavor profile. The reposado category, meaning "rested" in Spanish, requires aging in oak barrels for a minimum of two months but less than one year.

Herradura's current range includes reposado tequila, which represents the middle ground between the clean, agave-forward profile of blanco tequila and the deeper, more complex flavors developed through extended barrel aging in añejo expressions. Reposado tequilas typically exhibit a balance of agave character with subtle wood influences, including vanilla and spice notes derived from oak contact.
