Viognier is a white grape variety with origins in the northern Rhône Valley of France, particularly in the Condrieu region where it has been cultivated for centuries. The variety nearly disappeared in the mid-20th century due to declining vineyard plantings but experienced revival from the 1980s onwards as producers rediscovered its potential. Today it is grown across France, Australia, and South Africa, thriving in warm, sunny climates where it can achieve full ripeness and develop its characteristic aromatic profile.
The grape produces full-bodied white wines with distinctive aromatic intensity. Viognier typically displays stone fruit flavors—apricot and peach—along with white flower notes and sometimes honeyed or spiced characteristics. The wines generally have good weight and texture on the palate while maintaining freshness through natural acidity. Viognier can be vinified as a pure varietal white or blended with other grapes, particularly with red varieties like Syrah in Rhône-style blends, where small percentages add perfume and texture.
Condrieu in the northern Rhône remains the benchmark appellation for Viognier, producing elegant, age-worthy expressions from steep terraced vineyards. The variety also appears in broader Rhône appellations and in southern French regions. Beyond France, notable examples come from Australia's Barossa Valley and South Africa's Franschhoek region. Viognier's aromatic richness pairs well with aromatic and moderately spiced dishes—Southeast Asian cuisine, roasted poultry, and soft cheeses complement its stone fruit and floral character.
