Deep, glistening red. Sexy, assertively perfumed aromas of fresh red fruits, potpourri and baking spices, with a hint of cola in the background. Juicy and focused on the palate, Jay's 2017 Pinot Noir offers vibrant raspberry, bitter cherry, blood orange and rose pastille flavors and a late jolt of spicy white pepper. Made in a fresh, exuberant style, with silky tannins sneaking in slowly to add shape and grip to the impressively long, spice-accented finish. Aged in 30% new oak.
The 2016 Pinot Noir is pale to medium ruby-purple in colour with a nose of warm red and black cherries and cranberry plus touches of crushed blueberries, cinnamon stick, charcuterie, and underbrush. Light to medium-bodied, it has good concentration of warm red and black fruits in the mouth with earthy and spicy layers, soft, grainy tannins, and plenty of freshness, finishing long.
Pale to medium ruby-purple in colour, this wine opens with delicate pomegranate and cherry cordial notes with hints of dusty earth, dried herbs and garrigue. Light-bodied and elegantly played in the mouth, the chewy tannins and seamless freshness are well juxtaposed by just enough red berry and earthy flavours, finishing with herbal notes.

Nicolas Jay is a boutique winery located in Oregon's renowned Willamette Valley, specializing in Pinot Noir. The winery is a collaborative venture between music executive Jay Boberg and Burgundian winemaker Jean-Nicolas Méo of the esteemed Domaine Méo-Camuzet in France. This partnership combines Boberg's passion for Oregon wines with Méo's extensive winemaking expertise from his experience in Burgundy, aiming to produce Pinot Noirs that reflect the unique terroir of the Willamette Valley.

**Establishment and Philosophy:**
The project began in 2012 when Boberg and Méo decided to bring together their shared vision for crafting high-quality, expressive Pinot Noir. Nicolas Jay seeks to blend Burgundian winemaking techniques with the distinct characteristics of Oregon's vineyards. Their philosophy focuses on minimal intervention, allowing the natural qualities of the grapes and the influence of the terroir to shine through in the final product.

**Vineyard Practices and Winemaking:**
Nicolas Jay's approach to viticulture is centered on sustainability and careful management, using organic and biodynamic practices where feasible. The grapes are sourced from select vineyards across the Willamette Valley, including their own estate vineyard, Bishop Creek, which is known for its old vines and diverse microclimates. They also acquire grapes from other meticulously chosen sites that exemplify the region's diversity.

In the winery, Méo applies gentle techniques honed in Burgundy, with an emphasis on precision and respect for the fruit. The wines are typically fermented with native yeasts and are aged in French oak barrels, a portion of which are new, to add complexity and subtlety to the wine without overpowering the delicate Pinot Noir flavors.

**Wines and Reception:**
Nicolas Jay produces a range of Pinot Noir wines, from their entry-level Willamette Valley Pinot Noir to more limited, single-vineyard offerings that seek to express the nuances of their specific sites. Their wines are known for their elegance, balance, and depth, showcasing the varietal’s potential in Oregon’s soil and climate. The reception to Nicolas Jay’s wines has been positive, with critics noting their sophisticated integration of Old World winemaking techniques with New World innovation and character.

Overall, Nicolas Jay represents a successful international collaboration that highlights the quality of Oregon's Pinot Noir while bringing a touch of Burgundian finesse to the American wine landscape.
