This is like a more intense version of the Selección Personal, with the imprint of the 2016 vintage, floral aromas, a clean nose with complexity and elegance, showing very young but nuanced. They are forced to select looser bunches to be able to de stem the grapes by hand, and the grapes are more perfect, less compact and perhaps with a higher ratio of skin to juice. This explains the intensity of the Grano a Grano wines. The palate is balanced, with very good freshness and refined tannins.
The 2011 Tempranillo Grano a Grano is selected from the oldest plots. The bunches are hand-destemmed, and the grapes fermented in 1,200-kilo inox vats then transferred to new barrels for malolactic and 18 months aging. Having had that treatment, the nose has plenty of wild berries and some violets, and the smoky/spicy notes are still abundant but do not dominate the nose. The palate is however, quite marked by the élevage and will require time to absorb the oak. This is a modern, well-oaked Tempranillo for fans of the style, with good concentration and power, but perhaps the élevage erases the mark of the place. It should be better with time in bottle as the wood receded after a few days of being opened.

Abel Mendoza is a renowned wine producer from the Rioja region of Spain. With a history dating back to the 1980s, Abel Mendoza has established a reputation for producing some of the finest wines in the region. The winery is known for its commitment to traditional winemaking techniques, which are combined with modern technology to produce wines of exceptional quality.

Abel Mendoza produces a range of wines, including reds, whites, and rosés. The red wines are made from Tempranillo grapes, which are grown in the Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa sub-regions. These wines are aged in oak barrels for varying lengths of time, depending on the style of wine being produced. The result is a range of wines that are rich, complex, and full-bodied, with notes of dark fruit, spice, and vanilla.

The white wines produced by Abel Mendoza are made from Viura grapes, which are grown in the Rioja Baja sub-region. These wines are fermented in stainless steel tanks, which helps to preserve the delicate aromas and flavors of the grapes. The result is a range of wines that are crisp, refreshing, and full of citrus and floral notes.

Abel Mendoza also produces a range of rosé wines, which are made from a blend of Tempranillo and Garnacha grapes. These wines are fermented in stainless steel tanks, which helps to preserve the delicate aromas and flavors of the grapes. The result is a range of wines that are light, refreshing, and full of red fruit flavors.

Overall, Abel Mendoza is a producer that is committed to producing wines of exceptional quality. With a focus on traditional winemaking techniques and a commitment to using only the finest grapes, Abel Mendoza has established itself as one of the premier wine producers in the Rioja region of Spain. Whether you are a fan of reds, whites, or rosés, Abel Mendoza has a wine that is sure to please.

La Rioja is arguably Spain's most prestigious wine region, internationally renowned for its high-quality wines, particularly its refined reds. Located in northern Spain, the region benefits from a diverse climate that ranges from the cooler, wetter Atlantic influences in the west to the warmer, drier Mediterranean influences in the east, with the Ebro River playing a crucial role in moderating the climate. The Cantabrian Mountains also provide a barrier against harsh weather conditions from the north.

The region is best known for its robust, oak-aged red wines primarily made from the Tempranillo grape, which is the backbone of La Rioja's wine production. Other grapes such as Garnacha (Grenache), Graciano, and Mazuelo (Carignan) also play supporting roles in the blends. Rioja wines are classified into several categories based on their aging process: Rioja (the youngest), Crianza, Reserva, and Gran Reserva, with the latter two requiring several years of aging in oak barrels and bottles before release.

La Rioja is divided into three sub-regions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa, and Rioja Oriental (formerly known as Rioja Baja). Each area brings its unique characteristics to the wines. Rioja Alta is known for its old-world style wines with a balance of structure and acidity; Rioja Alavesa produces wines with a full-bodied and aromatic profile due to its limestone-rich soils; Rioja Oriental, being warmer, typically yields wines that are richer and more intensely colored.

The region's commitment to quality and tradition, combined with innovations in winemaking techniques, ensures that La Rioja continues to produce wines that are appreciated globally for their depth, complexity, and longevity. The picturesque landscapes of vine-covered hills and historic bodegas (wine cellars) also make La Rioja a popular destination for wine tourism.
