Zinfandel originated in Croatia, where it is known as Crljenak Kaštelanski, but achieved its greatest fame in California after arriving in the mid-19th century. The grape is genetically identical to Italy's Primitivo, which was planted in Puglia in the 18th century. California's warm, dry climate proved ideal for Zinfandel, particularly in regions like Sonoma County and Napa Valley, where old vine plantings continue to produce some of the most concentrated examples.
Zinfandel produces wines with intense berry flavors, ranging from blackberry and raspberry to more jammy characteristics in riper expressions. The wines typically show spice notes including black pepper, cinnamon, and clove, often accompanied by vanilla and oak when aged in barrels. Alcohol levels tend to be high due to the grape's ability to achieve substantial sugar accumulation, and the wines generally display full body with moderate to high tannins.
California remains Zinfandel's most important region, where it ranges from food-friendly table wines to powerful, age-worthy bottlings from heritage vineyards. In Italy's Puglia region, Primitivo produces wines with similar characteristics but often with a slightly earthier profile. These wines pair well with grilled meats, barbecue, and robust Italian dishes, with their natural acidity and fruit intensity complementing rich, savory flavors.
