Stag's Leap - Cask 23 - Cabernet Sauvignon - Napa Valley

Stag's Leap Cask 23 Cabernet Sauvignon is a premium wine produced in the Napa Valley region of California. This wine is made from the finest Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, which are carefully selected and aged in oak barrels to create a rich and complex flavour profile.

The taste profile of this wine is characterised by its deep, dark colour and intense aromas of blackberry, cassis, and vanilla. On the palate, it is full-bodied and rich, with flavours of dark fruit, chocolate, and spice. The tannins are firm and well-structured, providing a long and satisfying finish.

The history of Stag's Leap Wine Cellars dates back to 1970 when the winery was founded by Warren Winiarski. The winery quickly gained a reputation for producing some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon wines in the world, winning the famous Judgment of Paris wine competition in 1976.

Stag's Leap Cask 23 Cabernet Sauvignon is a wine that is best enjoyed with a hearty meal, such as a steak or roast beef. It is also a great wine to enjoy on its own, sipped slowly and savoured. Whether you are a wine connoisseur or simply looking for a special bottle to celebrate a special occasion, Stag's Leap Cask 23 Cabernet Sauvignon is a wine that is sure to impress.

Approximately 10% of the wine that went into the 2019 Cask 23 Cabernet Sauvignon was barrel fermented, so expect experimentation in that area to continue. The wine is a terrific example of this cuvée, offering tantalizing floral aromas set against a backdrop of ripe cherries and black cherries. It's medium to full-bodied, intense, rich and ripe, yet still silky and elegant, with a vibrant, mouthwatering finish.
The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Cask 23 reveals more oak on the nose, but is a much deeper, richer, fuller wine than the S.L.V. Dense ruby/purple to the rim, beautiful blackberry and cassis fruit, cedar wood, toast and earth jump from the glass. Full-bodied and layered, but with nothing out of balance, this is probably the strongest Cask 23 since the glory years of the mid-80s. Look for this wine to drink well young, yet age effortlessly for 25 years.
The terrific 2018 Cask 23 Cabernet Sauvignon leans a bit more heavily on the Fay Vineyard (the 2019 includes a bit more S.L.V.). It's medium to full-bodied, supple, silky, and elegant yet still possesses enough richness to evolve for the next two decades. From the stunning, slightly lifted aromas of violets, cherries and cassis to the long, dusty finish, this exudes class all the way.
The 2017 Cask 23 Cabernet Sauvignon is very deep purple black coloured with pronounced notes of crème de cassis, mocha, plum preserves, and unsmoked cigars with touches of dried herbs, fragrant soil, and iron ore. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a great intensity of ripe black fruit and grainy tannins with just enough freshness and a long, slightly chewy finish.
The deep purple black coloured barrel sample of 2016 Cask 23 Cabernet Sauvignon features compelling, youthful notes of freshly crushed red and black currants, black cherries, kirsch, and mocha with nuances of Marmite toast, roasted nuts, underbrush, and truffles. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a very firm frame of super ripe tannins supporting the multi-layered flavours, finishing on an epically long, lingering fragrant earth note. Beautiful.
Dusty and earthy, this is a memorable wine from the great estate. Cedar, compost, tobacco and stemmy fruit embrace a core of sturdy, supple tannin and well-integrated oak. Hints of baking spice, cardamom and clove add complexity, with high-toned acidity always brimming just below the surface.
