Tasting notes

I believe the perfumed and floral 2014 Colecci?n N? 4 Garnacha de La Dehesa is the first pure Garnacha I tasted from Benjam?n Romeo. It was sourced from one single vineyard planted in 1900, fermented in small oak vats with indigenous yeasts and matured in new French oak barrels for 18 months. As with many of the wines here, the fruit is so intense that the 100% new oak regime goes unnoticed. Yes, the wines are smoky and spicy, but the oak is not the main actor on the nose or the palate. Here, there are lots of flowers and wild berries, with contained ripeness, very fine tannins and great freshness that lifts up the wine and makes it very long. 3,000 bottles were filled in May 2016.

About this wine

Bodega Contador, Benjamín Romeo's Rioja estate, bottles this Tempranillo under the Colección No. 4 label, part of the Garnacha de la Dehesa range grown in La Rioja. It reflects Romeo's exacting, low-yield approach to the region, favouring precision and concentration over rustic bulk.

Expect a structured, powerful red with ripe dark fruit, firm tannin and enough backbone to stand up to grilled or roasted meat. Serve at 16–18°C alongside beef, lamb or roast poultry, a wine for the main course, not the aperitif hour.
