In de Rhônevallei wordt al meer dan 500 jaar wijn geproduceerd, waarvan sommige wijngaarden tot de oudste van Frankrijk behoren. De koning van de zuidelijke Rhône is Châteauneuf-du-Pape. In totaal zijn er dertien toegestaan, maar Grenache domineert meestal, samen met Syrah en Mourvèdre ter ondersteuning. Een goede vintage heeft acht tot tien jaar keldering nodig voor de beste resultaten.
