Aromas of sweet red cherries, figs, rose petals and spices introduce the 2022 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru, a medium to full-bodied, deep and layered wine that's one of the riper, more muscular wines in the range, exhibiting just a touch of sur maturité.
An opulent, rich nose with much new oak. The palate is hedonistic and well balanced with succulent red-berried fruit. A ravishing, licentious wine, perhaps without the persistency or depth to merit as long ageing as other Grand Crus, but still a heap of sappy, succulent fun.
This domaine can make some wonderful Bonnes-Mares when it wants to. This has a bright nose of raspberry, redcurrant and cranberry with a touch of chalk in the background. Good definition, with a note of green leaves emerging with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with wild strawberry, redcurrants and red cherries. A little tart at the moment but very fresh and lively on the finish, although it could do with more tension. Twist of lime on the aftertaste. Fine.
The Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a very expressive bouquet with violet-tinged blackberry and boysenberry fruit, well defined and quite precise. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannin, taut and linear for a Bonnes-Mares, but the coiled-up energy is palpable here. There is such energy on the finish that you know that this will turn into an exceptionally fine Bonnes-Mares.

The French Wine region of Burgundy (aka “Bourgogne”) may be small in size, but its influence is huge in the world of vino. The complexity of Burgundy can cast fear into the heart of even a seasoned wine pro, but fear not – the region need only be as complicated as you want it to be. Yes, it is home to some of the most expensive wines in the known universe, but there are also tasty and affordable wines.

Main grapes:

Pinot Noir originated in Burgundy and these vines cover 34% of the region, accounting for 29% of overall wine production. The red grape does extremely well in limestone and clay soil, which helps create their complexity. Pinot Noir wines from Burgundy range in colour from cherry to brick, are light in body, and typically have red fruit and spicy flavours. Gamay is a red grape also grown in Burgundy, but only makes up 10% of the vines.

Chardonnay is the primary grape for white wines in Burgundy, making up 48% of the vines and 68% of production. Chardonnay appreciates Burgundy’s marl soil, which gives it delicate floral, fruit, and mineral aromas and full-bodied flavours. The region does produce a sparkling wine called Crémant de Bourgogne. It can be made from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Aligoté, Gamay, Sacy, and Melon. Varieties include blanc, blanc de blancs, blanc de noirs, and rosé.
