Curtefranca DOC is a wine appellation located in Lombardy, northern Italy, situated in the Franciacorta area between Brescia and Lake Iseo. The denomination was established in 1967, initially as Terre di Franciacorta DOC, before being renamed to Curtefranca DOC. This appellation encompasses the same geographic territory as the famous Franciacorta DOCG but focuses on still wines rather than sparkling wine production.
The region benefits from a continental climate moderated by the nearby Lake Iseo, with warm summers and cool winters that provide ideal conditions for grape ripening. The soils are predominantly morainic, composed of glacial deposits with good drainage properties. Curtefranca DOC permits both red and white wine production, with Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco allowed for white wines, while red wines can be made from Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Nebbiolo, and Pinot Nero. The regulations require specific minimum alcohol levels and aging periods depending on the wine type.
Curtefranca white wines, particularly those made from Chardonnay, tend to display fresh acidity balanced with good structure and mineral undertones derived from the morainic soils. The cool influence of Lake Iseo helps preserve the natural acidity in the grapes, resulting in wines with crisp, clean profiles and subtle fruit characteristics. These wines often show restraint and elegance, reflecting the cooler climate conditions of this northern Italian region.
