Pinot Grigio

Pinot Grigio is a white wine grape variety that originated as a mutation of Pinot Noir in Burgundy, France, where it is known as Pinot Gris. The grape spread throughout Europe centuries ago and found particular success in northeastern Italy, where it has become one of the country's most widely planted white varieties. It thrives in cooler climates and well-drained soils, developing its characteristic crisp acidity and mineral-driven profile in regions with significant diurnal temperature variation.

Italian Pinot Grigio typically produces light to medium-bodied wines with bright acidity and clean, fresh flavors. The wines display subtle aromas of green apple, pear, and citrus, often accompanied by mineral notes and occasionally hints of white flowers. The Italian style tends toward crisp, dry wines with moderate alcohol levels and a straightforward, food-friendly character that emphasizes freshness over complexity.

The grape performs exceptionally well in Italy's northern regions, particularly Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Trentino-Alto Adige, where the combination of Alpine influences and varied soil types creates ideal growing conditions. These wines pair naturally with seafood, light pasta dishes, risotto, and fresh cheeses. The higher-altitude vineyards of Alto Adige often produce Pinot Grigio with greater mineral intensity and aromatic complexity, while Friuli examples tend to show more fruit-forward characteristics.
