Pinot Bianco

Pinot Bianco, known as Pinot Blanc in France, is a white grape variety that originated as a mutation of Pinot Grigio in the Burgundy region of France. The variety spread throughout Europe centuries ago and has established significant plantings in Alsace, northern Italy's Alto Adige and Friuli regions, and parts of Germany and Austria where it is called Weissburgunder. The grape thrives in cooler climates with well-drained soils, producing wines with moderate acidity and good structure.

Pinot Bianco typically produces wines with a pale straw color and delicate aromatics featuring green apple, pear, and citrus notes, often accompanied by subtle floral hints and mineral undertones. The wines generally display medium body with crisp acidity and a clean, fresh finish. In still wine production, Pinot Bianco creates elegant, food-friendly wines that can range from light and crisp to more textured expressions depending on winemaking techniques. The grape also serves as a valuable component in sparkling wine blends, contributing finesse and structure to traditional method wines.

In Alsace, Pinot Blanc forms the backbone of many Crémant d'Alsace sparkling wines and produces reliable still wines with characteristic minerality. Italian regions like Friuli-Venezia Giulia showcase the grape's ability to express terroir, while in Tuscany it often appears in blends that add freshness and complexity. The wines pair excellently with seafood, light poultry dishes, soft cheeses, and vegetarian cuisine, making them versatile choices for various dining occasions.
