Lo Chardonnay è l'uva principale per i vini bianchi in Borgogna, rappresentando il 48% dei vigneti e il 68% della produzione. Lo Chardonnay apprezza il terreno di marna della Borgogna, che gli conferisce aromi floreali delicati, fruttati e minerali e sapori corposi. L'Aligoté è il secondo vitigno bianco, rappresentando il 6% coltivato. {Leggi di più sull'antico vitigno Aligoté in Borgogna.}

Marsannay is the northernmost appellation in Burgundy's Côte d'Or, located at the transition between the Côte de Nuits and the city of Dijon. This appellation was officially established in 1987, making it one of Burgundy's newer AOCs. The vineyards are positioned on gentle slopes facing east and southeast, with elevations ranging from 250 to 390 meters.

The terroir consists primarily of limestone and marl soils mixed with alluvial deposits from ancient river systems. The climate is continental with moderate rainfall and good sun exposure. Marsannay is unique among Côte d'Or appellations as it permits the production of red, white, and rosé wines, though red wines from Pinot Noir dominate production. The appellation covers approximately 230 hectares across the communes of Marsannay-la-Côte, Couchey, and Chenôve.

Marsannay red wines typically display the approachable character of northern Burgundy Pinot Noir, with bright red fruit flavors, moderate tannins, and good acidity. These wines tend to be less structured and concentrated than those from more prestigious Côte de Nuits appellations further south, making them accessible in their youth while still capable of moderate aging. The limestone-rich soils contribute mineral undertones and help maintain freshness in the wines.
