Oban

Oban is a distillery located in the town of Oban, in the western Scottish Highlands. Founded in 1794, it is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland. Oban produces a single malt whisky that is known for its rich, full-bodied flavor and its distinctive maritime character. The production process at Oban is a traditional one, with the whisky being made from 100% malted barley. The barley is first steeped in water and then spread out on the malting floor to germinate. Once the barley has sprouted, it is dried in a kiln over peat fires, which gives the whisky its smoky flavor. After the barley has been malted and dried, it is ground into a coarse flour and mixed with hot water to create a mash. The mash is then transferred to large wooden washbacks, where yeast is added to begin the fermentation process. The resulting liquid, known as wash, is then distilled twice in copper pot stills to create the final product. Oban produces a range of different whiskies, including a 14-year-old single malt that is matured in oak casks. This whisky has a rich, fruity flavor with notes of honey, vanilla, and spice. Oban also produces a limited edition 18-year-old single malt that is matured in sherry casks. This whisky has a deep, complex flavor with notes of dried fruit, chocolate, and oak.
