Gewurztraminer

Gewurztraminer

Gewürztraminer is an aromatic white grape variety believed to have originated in the Alto Adige region of northern Italy, where it is known simply as Traminer. The grape's name translates to "spicy Traminer" in German, reflecting its distinctive aromatic intensity. While it grows in several cool-climate regions, Gewürztraminer reaches its finest expression in Alsace, France, where it has been cultivated since the Middle Ages and is recognized as one of the region's four noble grape varieties.

The variety produces wines with an unmistakable aromatic profile dominated by lychee, rose petals, and exotic spices including ginger and white pepper. Gewürztraminer wines typically display a rich, oily texture with moderate to high alcohol levels and relatively low acidity. The grape's pink-skinned berries contribute to wines that often show a slight golden or copper tint. Styles range from dry to intensely sweet, with late-harvest and selection de grains nobles versions showcasing the grape's natural affinity for botrytis.

Alsace remains the benchmark region for Gewürztraminer, producing both varietal wines and Grand Cru expressions from premier vineyard sites. The variety also thrives in Alto Adige, where cooler temperatures preserve more delicate floral characteristics. These aromatic wines pair exceptionally well with spiced Asian cuisine, foie gras, strong cheeses, and dishes featuring ginger or curry spices, as the wine's natural spiciness complements rather than competes with bold flavors.
