The 2011 La Poja is a pure expression of Corvina Veronese, one of the break-out indigenous grapes that is getting much deserved attention in Northern Italy today. Corvina stands on its own two feet as a monovarietal wine thanks to its color intensity and soft structure. However, this expression bears the signs of the warm vintage with slightly evolved or oxidized notes of cured meat and exotic spice. There is very little primary fruit left and a sour note appears on the close. I have reduced the drinking window as a result. It is aged in new Allier barrique for 20 months. The wine is almost too much of a good thing and much of the complexity and depth is lost given its overwhelming power.
The 2010 La Poja is the latest bottling of one of Italy's most unique wines. This is a pure expression of the Corvina Veronese variety, the chief component of Amarone wines made according to the appassimento process. La Poja allows this finicky grape to sing solo with some 20 months in new barrique followed by eight months in the bottle. The results are outstanding with pristine cherry and blackberry followed by spice, leather and tar. For best results, age this wine another four or five years.
The 2007 La Poja comes across as big, rich and voluptuous. Dark red fruit, flowers, spices, French oak and liquorice are some of the notes that take shape as this layered wine opens up in the glass. I especially like the enveloping, sensual finish here. La Poja is 100% Corvina that spends 28 months in new French oak barrels.
