Réunion is a French overseas department in the Indian Ocean, part of the Mascarene Islands east of Madagascar. Its drinks production is centred on sugarcane spirit, and rum is the island's defining product. Distilleries are found mainly along the coast, close to the cane fields and sugar mills that supply them. Wine plays a very minor role, limited to a small production in the highland cirque of Cilaos.
The island is volcanic, with steep ridges, deep valleys and a dramatic range of altitude. Its tropical climate varies sharply by exposure: the windward east coast is wetter, while the west and south are drier and sunnier. Sugarcane thrives in these conditions and is the foundation of the local spirits tradition. Rum on Réunion is made both from molasses, a by-product of sugar production, and from fresh cane juice in the style known as rhum agricole. The molasses-based style is the more common of the two. Because the climate is warm, ageing in barrel progresses faster than in cooler regions.
A distinctive part of the island's culture is rhum arrangé, rum macerated with fruits, spices, or aromatic plants. The practice is common across the French-speaking tropics and is often done at home, though some distilleries bottle their own versions. Réunion's agriculture supplies local ingredients such as vanilla, ginger, citrus, and tropical fruits. Combinations like ginger and lemon are typical, giving a flavoured style that is sweeter and more aromatic than white or aged rum and is usually served neat, over ice, or in simple mixed drinks.
