The Berthenet family has been involved in winemaking since the 16th century, but the modern winery was established more recently by the family. Today, it is run by François Berthenet, who represents the fourth generation of his family to manage the domaine.

Specializing in white wines made from Chardonnay, Domaine Berthenet produces Montagny wines that are known for their purity, finesse, and mineral character. The Montagny appellation is exclusively for white wines, and the wines from this region are celebrated for their vibrant acidity and freshness, which make them particularly food-friendly and suitable for aging.

The domaine covers about 23 hectares of vineyards, with a significant portion in Premier Cru sites. These vineyards are farmed with sustainable practices to ensure the health of the vineyard and surrounding environment. Der Chardonnay ist die wichtigste Rebsorte für Weißweine in Burgund und macht 48 % der Reben und 68 % der Produktion aus. Der Chardonnay schätzt die Mergelböden des Burgunds, die ihm delikate blumige, fruchtige und mineralische Aromen und einen vollmundigen Geschmack verleihen. The vineyards in Montagny are set at various altitudes between 250 to 400 meters, which supports a cool microclimate that helps preserve acidity and freshness in the grapes. The soil is predominantly limestone mixed with clay and chalk, ideal for Chardonnay, giving the wines a pronounced mineral quality, which is a defining feature of Montagny's terroir.

Montagny wines are typically vibrant, displaying green apple and citrus fruit flavors, alongside a distinct flinty or stony minerality. They may also show floral notes and, when aged in oak, hints of toast and vanilla, which complement rather than dominate the fruit's freshness.

While many Montagny wines are best enjoyed young for their freshness, those from Premier Cru vineyards offer greater complexity and structure, allowing them to age gracefully for several years. These Premier Cru wines are more concentrated and can develop richer, more nuanced flavors over time.
