Pic Saint-Loup

Pic Saint-Loup

Pic Saint-Loup is an appellation d'origine contrôlée located in the Languedoc region of southern France, approximately 20 kilometers north of Montpellier. The appellation takes its name from the distinctive limestone peak that dominates the landscape, rising to 658 meters above sea level. Established as an AOC in 1985, the zone encompasses vineyards planted on the foothills and slopes surrounding this dramatic geological landmark.

The terroir combines Mediterranean climate influences with the cooling effects of altitude and the nearby Cévennes mountains. Soils are predominantly limestone and clay-limestone, often mixed with garrigue scrubland that imparts herbal notes to the wines. Red wines must contain at least 90% of the principal grape varieties Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre, with Syrah and Grenache forming the backbone of most blends. The appellation also produces smaller quantities of rosé and white wines, though red wine production dominates.

Pic Saint-Loup reds typically display a Mediterranean character with notable freshness and minerality derived from the limestone soils. The wines often exhibit dark fruit flavors complemented by garrigue herbs such as thyme and rosemary, with Syrah contributing structure and spice while Grenache adds warmth and roundness. The combination of Mediterranean warmth and mountain influence creates wines with good aging potential and a distinctive sense of place.
