Tasting Notes

This 2025 Sauvignon Blanc is one of New Zealand's signature wines. A blend of Marlborough's Wairau and Awatere Valleys, this vintage offers aromas of lemongrass, jalapeño pepper, and fresh herbs. There's plenty of freshness in this vintage, influenced by the altitude of this mountainous vineyard, between land and ocean. With a light yellow-green color, this wine displays good acidity and a supple palate, which continues into a long finish. This Sauvignon Blanc pairs perfectly with seafood and white meats.

The 2023 Private Bin Sauvignon Blanc is a behemoth in the export market, and it delivers a pretty archetypal “Marlborough Sauvy” experience—crunchy, herbal, green, tropical and juicy. All good things in this context.
Villa's Private Bin Sauvignon Blanc strikes a careful balance between leafy, herbal and even gently vegetal characters and tropical fruit. Hints of snow peas accent passion fruit on the nose, while the medium-bodied palate is streamlined and refreshing, ending on notes of cut grass, fresh citrus and tinned pineapple.
Sourced from vineyards across the Marlborough region, this intense Sauvignon Blanc is alive with a myriad of flavours dominated by gooseberry, passionfruit, fresh citrus and herbaceous aromas. The Private Bin Sauvignon Blanc showcases everything fresh and vibrant about Marlborough. Initially, the classic Awatere aromas jump out of the glass, such as lemongrass, jalapeño peppers and fresh herbs. The cool climate in the Awatere Valley is influenced by Mt Tapuae-o-uenuku and the cool alpine winds and fresh sea breezes protect the natural acidity in this wine. In contrast, the Wairau Valley has warmer summer months, with dry nor-westerly winds influencing vineyards to produce a pungent Sauvignon Blanc with ripe citrus and tropical fruit flavours.

Marlborough occupies the northeastern tip of New Zealand's South Island, centered around the Wairau and Awatere valleys. The region became New Zealand's largest wine-producing area following the planting of its first commercial vineyards in the 1970s. Marlborough accounts for approximately two-thirds of New Zealand's total wine production, transforming the country's international wine reputation within a few decades.

The region experiences a cool maritime climate with significant diurnal temperature variation, particularly in the Wairau Valley where morning fog often gives way to sunny afternoons. Marlborough's diverse soils range from young alluvial gravels near river beds to older clay-based soils on hillside terraces. The Wairau Valley typically produces wines with more immediate fruit character, while the cooler Awatere Valley tends to yield wines with greater minerality and structure.

Sauvignon Blanc dominates Marlborough's plantings and defines its global identity, characterized by intense tropical fruit flavors, herbaceous notes, and bright acidity. The region's distinctive style of Sauvignon Blanc, with its combination of passionfruit, gooseberry, and bell pepper characteristics, differs markedly from Loire Valley expressions of the same grape. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay represent the region's other significant varieties, with Pinot Noir particularly successful in the cooler sites and Chardonnay showing both oaked and unoaked expressions depending on producer philosophy.
