”2008 was a challenging vintage in Ribera del Duero, a vintage marked by a severe frost on September 24th. The vineyards of Vega Sicilia were saved by some anti-frost burners that really made the difference. Even though, there are only some 70,000 bottles of 2008 Único, a wine that will be released around March 2016 after the 2007, and before they sell 2005 and 2006. It's a fresher, more mineral version of Vega, and very much Vega in character. It has a certain aroma that I cannot define that I also found in the 2011 Valbuena. The palate is surprisingly polished; the wine is quite accessible from now on, with fine tannins and a subtle thread of acidity going through the core. This is a lighter version of Único, but one style I like very much; it's a wine that should drink well throughout its life. A triumph for the vintage conditions.” Luis Gutiérrez

”Neal Martin had already tasted the 2005 Único in 2012, before I joined The Wine Advocate, but then they released 2007 and 2008 before and the 2005 has been kept until now, as they thought the vintage required some more time in bottle. It's mostly Tempranillo with some 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, fermented with indigenous yeasts in oak vats and aged for almost six years in 225-liter French and American oak barrels and 20,000-liter oak vats. The extra time in bottle has helped the wine to develop its bouquet, and it feels very aromatic and open, with the classical Vega Sicilia perfume of yesteryear, earthy, leafy and spicy, even if they wine was kept because of its power. It's still powerful, but at the same time it's elegant and has a polished mouthfeel and fine-grained tannins. 93,545 bottles, 2,391 magnums, 146 double magnums and six imperials produced. ” Luis Gutiérrez

Few wines have a history as distinguished as that of Vega Sicilia. Founded in the 1860’s, its top cuvée, Unico, was Spain’s first great wine and until recent decades the only Spanish wine collected and coveted throughout the world. Unico is still made as it was a half century or more ago: a selection of only the best vintages released after a decade or more of age. Made from at least 80% Tempranillo and small amounts of Bordeaux varietals, it is a wine of epic proportions, known for great restraint in its youth but an almost unlimited cellaring potential.

Onshore Cellars - ICONIC Producer

Known as a mythical winery, and regarded as Spain’s one and only ‘first growth’, Vega Sicilia is Spain’s most prestigious wine estate located in Ribera del Duero. Founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda who came from Bordeaux armed with cuttings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec and planted them with Spain’s signature grape, Tempranillo.

The winery changed hands several times beforethe current owners, the Alvarez family, took over in 1982. Over the years, Vega Sicilia has built an international and formidable reputation for itself.

Vega Sicilia has founded its success on meticulous wine producing practices. The winery’s philosophy incorporates low yields, painstaking grape selection and prolonged barrel ageing (1970 Unico has over 16 years). The resulting wines are delicate and complex, with great personality and which have a capacity for ageing which can only be matched by some of the greats from Bordeaux.
