It is distinguished by its harmony, finesse and completeness; In the glass, aromas of Anjou pear, crisp yellow apple, fresh bread, clear honey, iodine and fresh mint take flight, it is a full-bodied, ample and cushiony wine, with a core of fruit, concentrated and balanced effortlessly, combining precision and sensuality for a convincing effect. Belted by racy acids and animated by a delicate mousse, it ends with a long and penetrating finish.
One of the very finest wines produced in this less heralded vintage is Egly's 2014 Brut Grand Cru Millésime, a strikingly vinous and enveloping Champagne that wafts from the glass with aromas of pear, mirabelle plum, freshly baked bread, almond paste and honeycomb. Full-bodied, satiny and layered, its textural attack segues into a deep, concentrated mid-palate of exceptional purity and cut, concluding with a long, penetrating and mouthwateringly saline finish. As ever, it's a blend of some 70% Pinot Noir with 30% Chardonnay from Ambonnay's greatest terroirs.
Broad and powerful, Egly's 2012 Brut Grand Cru Millésime is a serious, vinous Champagne somewhat reminiscent of his brilliant 2002. Delivering complex aromas of pear, honeycomb, orange oil, sweet stone fruits, praline and freshly baked bread, it's full-bodied, deep and muscular, with a multidimensional core of fruit, racy acids and a long, resonant finish. Complex and compelling, readers will have a hard time choosing between the power and texture of 2012 and the quintessentially elegant, seamless 2013. Both are benchmarks for what contemporary Champagne can achieve.
Offering up an incipiently complex bouquet of orchard fruit, citrus oil, pralines, and freshly baked bread, now complemented by hints of iodine, clear honey, and mirabelle plum, it was full-bodied, deep, and layered, with immense depth and concentration, racy acids, and elegantly muscular structuring dry extract. Long and penetrating, as previously noted, this wine was a monument to what Champagne's grower revolution has achieved over the last 30 or so years.
The 2007 Brut Millésime Grand Cru is a really rich and intense, yet also a pure and fresh cuvée based on 60/70% barrel-fermented Pinot Noir and 30/40% barrel-fermented Chardonnay. It is a full-bodied, concentrated and extremely well-structured cuvée with a grippy, long and persistent finish. The dosage is two grams per liter. There are lovely fresh berry flavors on the nose.
Francis Egly's 2005 Brut Grand Cru Millésime is a brilliant wine in this middling vintage, bursting from the glass with aromas of orange oil, buttered toast, pear, praline and subtle spices. Full-bodied, muscular and vinous, it's layered and multidimensional, with a rich core of fruit, succulent acids and chalky structuring extract, complemented by a pinpoint mousse. This is a gourmand, gastronomic Champagne in its prime today.
The 2002 Brut Grand Cru Millésime is spectacular today, soaring from the glass with a complex bouquet of smoky pear, lemon, mandarin orange and peach mingled with smoke, praline, crushed mint and hints of wet chalk. Full-bodied, layered and seamless, it's deep and strikingly complete, with a textural attack that segues into a concentrated core framed by a vibrant spine of acidity and buttressed by chalky extract. Long and penetrating, this is one of the finest vintages Francis Egly has produced to date.
