Trapet's 2019 Chambertin Grand Cru is a profound wine in the making, and it can keeps company with vintage's finest. Wafting from the glass with deep aromas of cherries and cassis, complemented by notions of raw cocoa, blood orange, smoked meats, rich soil tones and spices, it's full-bodied, multidimensional and complete, with a weightless, elegant profile despite its prodigious concentration, its structuring tannins entirely concealed in an ample core of lively, vibrant fruit.
Trapet's 2018 Chambertin Grand Cru is showing superbly, unfurling in the glass with a profound bouquet of cassis, cherries and red berries mingled with notes of dark chocolate, rose petals, licorice and exotic spices. Full-bodied, supple and enveloping, it's effortless and complete, with an ample chassis of exquisitely fine, powdery tannins and lively acids, concluding with a long and penetrating finish. This is a stunning Chambertin in the making and an ineffably elegant one at that.
The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and superb acidity, offering flavours of red berries and cherries, underpinned by delicate spice reminiscent of light tobacco, earth, and undergrowth. The wine is immensely juicy, with impressive balance and a tightly wound, firm, and masculine finish, including a hint of tobacco on the after taste.
Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune, the nose on Jean-Louis Trapet’s 2011 Chambertin Grand Cru takes time to settle down, eventually offering baked cherries, strawberry, a touch of bacon fat (perhaps just a hint of brettanomyces ?) and earth, later manifesting marine influences like Armand Rousseau’s. The palate is medium-bodied with quite dense tannins, good body, but missing finesse toward the finish that feels more forward than it ought.
