Tasting notes
Tempier's 2016 Bandol Cuvee Classique was the only red I had a chance to taste from this historic domaine. A Mourvèdre-dominated wine (70% to 75%, depending on the vintage) blended from several vineyards and aged in foudres, it shows some leathery scents alongside vibrant purple fruit. In the mouth, it's medium to full-bodied, marked by almost painful acids, while the tannins are ripe and supple.

About this wine
Domaine Tempier - Bandol - Rouge
Domaine Tempier makes this red in Bandol, the Mediterranean appellation on Provence's coast. It is a Mourvèdre-led blend, with Cinsault, Grenache and Syrah in support. This is a serious, structured red, a long way from the pale rosé many people associate with the region.
Expect leathery scents over vivid purple fruit. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with vibrant, driving acidity and ripe, supple tannins. It is a wine with energy and grip rather than softness.
Mourvèdre supplies the backbone: dark fruit, grip and a gamey edge. Cinsault adds lift, Grenache warmth and Syrah depth of colour and spice. The wine is blended from several vineyards and aged in foudres. Bandol's warm, sea-influenced climate ripens Mourvèdre fully while keeping the acidity intact.
It is built for grilled lamb chops, duck and mushroom dishes, and it handles fresh herbs and aromatic dishes well.
