Tasting notes20142010200991 Points - The Wine Advocate”The 2014 Phelan-Segur has quite a punchy nose with blackberry, iris and iodine scents that shoot from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a pleasant chewiness on the entry. This segues into a well balanced middle with well-judged acidity, crisp black fruit infused with graphite and a touch of sea salt towards the finish. It might not quite have the finesse of the top Saint Estèphe's, but there is clearly decent length and energy here. Tasted twice with consistent notes."Neal Martin90 Points - The Wine Advocate”A major sleeper of the vintage, the 2010 Phelan-Segur has a dense ruby/purple color, ripe mulberry and black currant fruit intermixed with some floral notes, and a hint of subtle oak as well as touches of lavender and licorice. Layered, opulent, ripe and fleshy, this beauty should drink nicely for 10-15 years." Robert Parker90 Points - The Wine Advocate”The best Phelan-Segur since the 1990, this is a rather dense, full-bodied, massive wine for a cru bourgeois. Sweet blackberry and black raspberry fruit intermixed with crushed rock and a hint of subtle oak jump from the glass of this full-bodied, intense, yet attractive and alluring wine. There is significant depth and substance to this Phelan-Segur, which is a sleeper of the vintage that should last up to 15 or more years.“

Onshore Cellars - ICONIC Producer

Established at the beginning of the 19th century, Château Phélan-Ségur is the work of a remarkable winegrower, Mr. Phélan, of Irish origin, came to settle in Saint-Estèphe.

This cru, one of the most extensive in the Médoc, was made up of two properties, Clos de Garramey and Château Ségur, which belonged to the Count of Ségur, nicknamed the `` prince of the vines ''.

The castle, recognized by all as an exceptionally successful model, was born from the desire of a man to bring together in a homogeneous and fully integrated architectural whole the prestigious residence, the farm buildings, the cellars and the vat room. The high-quality terroir, with controlled yields and modernized facilities, ensure that the wines produced are very regular from one vintage to another.

Bordeaux, in the southwest of France, needs little introduction as one of the world's most famous, prestigious and prolific wine regions. The majority of Bordeaux wines (nearly 90 percent of production volume) are the dry, medium- and full-bodied red Bordeaux Blends that established its reputation.

The finest (and most expensive) of these are the wines from the great châteaux of the Haut-Médoc and the Right Bank appellations Saint-Émilion and Pomerol. The former is focused (at the top level) on Cabernet Sauvignon, the latter pair on on Merlot.

The legendary reds are complemented by high-quality white wines based on Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc. These range from dry whites to challenge the best from the Burgundy region (Pessac-Léognan is particularly renowned) to the sweet, botrytized nectars of Sauternes.

The best of Saint-Estephe wines are from the northernmost appellation of the Medoc. They offer a purity and intensity that is seldom found in other Bordeaux wines.

However, the region also produces a myriad of wines that are rustic and austere in style. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are the kings here. Even though some Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot are planted in the region, they only play a minor role.

St. Estephe has numerous Cru Bourgeois wines that are easily at the level of many 5th growths, yet they sell for a pittance, when compared to numerous more expensive wines from the Left Bank. There are 35 Cru Bourgeois classified chateau in the Saint Estephe Appellation. That is more than any other major appellation.
