Tasting notes
Vibrant ruby with garnet hints, this volcanic Nerello Mascalese opens with lifted aromas of wild red cherry, dried rose petals, and crushed pumice minerality. On the palate, bright cranberry and blood orange flavors are framed by silky, fine-grained tannins and lively acidity. Subtle notes of iron, dried herbs, and woodsmoke add complexity, while the finish is long, saline, and refreshingly taut, a hallmark of the Calderara Sottana contrada.

About this wine
Benanti's Contrada Calderara Sottana Rosso is a single-contrada Etna Rosso from Sicily, made entirely from Nerello Mascalese grown on the volcano's mineral-rich soils. Contrada wines are Etna's answer to Burgundy's climats, each site expressing its own character through this thin-skinned, structured variety.
Expect a red with real perfume, red cherry and wild herb notes, fine tannin and the volcanic, ashy minerality that defines serious Etna Rosso. At 14% abv it has enough backbone for grilled meats and game, but the freshness to suit lighter dishes too.
