Darroze

Darroze is an armagnac producer based in France's Gascony region, in southwestern France. The house is known for bottling vintage and aged armagnacs, often sourcing spirits from various estates within the traditional armagnac production area. Their approach emphasizes transparency about provenance, frequently identifying specific domains and vintage years on their releases.

Armagnac as a category differs from cognac in production methods and regulations. It is typically made from a broader range of grape varieties and distilled once in continuous stills rather than twice in copper pot stills. This single distillation produces a spirit with more pronounced grape character and rusticity compared to cognac. Darroze's selection approach focuses on older, well-aged expressions that have spent considerable time in oak, allowing the wood to shape the spirit's complexity and color.

The current Darroze collection includes vintage-dated releases such as the 1993 bottling from Domaine la Boubée, classified as Hors d'Âge (beyond age classification). These older releases represent armagnac aged well beyond the minimum requirements, offering the depth and integration that extended maturation provides. Such bottlings reflect the producer's commitment to sourcing and presenting substantial, aged spirits rather than younger expressions.
