Tardana is a white grape variety indigenous to the Castilla-La Mancha region of central Spain, where it has been cultivated for centuries. This ancient varietal is particularly well-adapted to the continental climate and alkaline soils of the Manchuela appellation, thriving in the high-altitude vineyards that characterize this part of Spain. The grape's name derives from its late-ripening nature, as "tardana" relates to its tendency to mature later in the harvest season compared to other local varieties.
Tardana produces wines with distinctive mineral characteristics and bright acidity, reflecting the chalky soils of its native terroir. The wines typically display citrus and stone fruit aromas, often accompanied by herbal notes and a characteristic saline quality. On the palate, Tardana wines tend to be medium-bodied with crisp acidity and a clean, dry finish that showcases the grape's natural minerality.
In the Manchuela region, Tardana is primarily vinified as a varietal wine, allowing its unique terroir expression to shine through. The wine's fresh acidity and mineral profile make it an excellent companion to seafood, particularly grilled fish and shellfish, as well as traditional Spanish tapas and goat cheese from the local region.
