Encruzado

Encruzado is a white grape native to Portugal's Dão region, where it has been cultivated for centuries. The variety is virtually exclusive to this area in central Portugal, rarely found elsewhere in commercial production. It thrives in Dão's granite-based soils and cooler climate, which contribute to its characteristic profile. The name derives from a crossroads or intersection, though its exact ancestry remains debated among ampelographers.

Encruzado produces dry white wines with distinctive mineral character and good acidity. Typical aromas include citrus, stone fruit, and herbal notes, with some wines developing honeyed or waxy characteristics with age. The wines tend toward medium body with a clean, linear structure and can show surprising complexity and longevity compared to many other Portuguese whites. Young Encruzados are often bright and fresh, while aged examples develop deeper, more textured profiles.

The grape is almost entirely confined to the Dão appellation, where it represents a small but quality-focused segment of white wine production. In the kitchen, Encruzado pairs well with seafood, particularly shellfish, and works with lighter poultry dishes and fresh cheeses. Its mineral spine and moderate alcohol make it versatile for both casual drinking and more considered wine pairing.
