Fiano

Fiano is a white grape variety native to Campania in southern Italy, where it has been cultivated for centuries. The variety thrives in the volcanic soils of the region, particularly around Avellino and Paestum, where the Mediterranean climate and elevated vineyard sites create ideal conditions for ripening. Despite its ancient presence in the region, Fiano remained relatively obscure outside Italy until recent decades, when improved winemaking techniques began to reveal its quality potential.

Fiano produces dry white wines with considerable structure and ageing potential. The wines typically display citrus and stone fruit aromas—lemon, green apple, and peach—often with floral and mineral notes that reflect the volcanic terroir. Fiano wines possess good acidity and a fuller body than many Italian whites, with a characteristic waxy or almond-like texture on the palate. The best examples show complexity and balance, aging gracefully over several years while developing deeper honey and herb-like characteristics.

The two primary appellations for Fiano are Fiano di Avellino DOCG, the stricter and more established designation, and Fiano Paestum IGT, which represents a newer growing region in the Paestum area. Both produce wines suited to seafood, particularly shellfish and white fish, as well as creamy pasta dishes and aged cheeses. The mineral backbone and acidity also make Fiano a versatile food wine that pairs well with vegetable-based dishes and lighter poultry preparations.
