Celler de Capçanes

Celler de Capçanes is a winery located in the Montsant denomination of origin in Cataluña, Spain. This region sits adjacent to the famous Priorat, sharing similar slate and quartzite soils that contribute to concentrated, mineral-driven wines. Montsant was established as its own DO in 2001, having previously been part of the larger Tarragona appellation.

The Montsant region is characterized by its Mediterranean climate with continental influences, creating ideal conditions for both international and indigenous grape varieties. The area is known for producing full-bodied red wines with good structure and aging potential. The slate soils, called "llicorella" locally, are particularly well-suited to varieties like Garnacha, Cariñena, and Syrah, though many producers also work successfully with international grapes like Merlot and Tempranillo.

Based on their current range, Celler de Capçanes works with a blend of international varieties including Syrah, Merlot, and Tempranillo, along with the less common Garganega grape. Their Peraj Petita bottling demonstrates the winery's approach to blending multiple varieties, and notably carries kosher certification, indicating adherence to specific winemaking protocols.
