Grenache Blanc

Grenache Blanc

Grenache Blanc originated in Spain, where it is known as Garnacha Blanca, before spreading throughout the Mediterranean basin. The grape is a white mutation of the red Grenache variety and has become particularly established in southern France, especially in the Rhône Valley and Languedoc regions. It thrives in warm, dry climates and well-drained soils, showing excellent adaptation to the Mediterranean terroir.

Grenache Blanc produces wines with moderate acidity and medium to full body, typically displaying aromas of white flowers, citrus peel, and stone fruits such as peach and apricot. The wines often exhibit a characteristic mineral undertone and can develop honeyed notes with age. In warm vintages, the variety can show tropical fruit characteristics and a slight phenolic grip that adds texture to the wine.

The grape plays an important role in white Rhône blends, particularly in Côtes du Rhône Blanc and Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc, where it is frequently blended with Roussanne, Marsanne, and other regional varieties. In Spain's Catalonia region, including appellations like Montsant, it contributes to both varietal wines and blends. Grenache Blanc wines pair well with Mediterranean cuisine, grilled fish, and dishes featuring herbs such as thyme and rosemary.
