Aligoté is a white grape variety native to Burgundy, where it has been cultivated for centuries as an alternative to Chardonnay. The vine thrives in cooler climates and is particularly well-suited to the limestone-rich soils of the region. While Burgundy remains its primary home, Aligoté is also grown in smaller quantities in Eastern Europe, notably in Bulgaria and Romania, though these plantings remain marginal compared to the French heartland.
Wines made from Aligoté are typically light-bodied with crisp acidity and green fruit character. You can expect citrus notes—lemon and lime—alongside green apple and sometimes herbaceous or mineral undertones. The wines are generally dry and straightforward, lacking the complexity or aging potential of premium Chardonnay but offering refreshing directness. When well-made, they display good tension and a clean finish; poorly made examples can taste thin or vegetal.
In Burgundy, Aligoté is primarily produced under the Bourgogne Aligoté appellation, a designation established to distinguish it from the more prestigious Chardonnay-based wines. The grape is also occasionally blended with Chardonnay in certain Burgundian whites. Aligoté pairs well with lighter fare—oysters, shellfish, goat's cheese, and fresh vegetables—making it a practical choice for aperitifs or casual meals rather than fine dining. The wine is best consumed young, typically within two to three years of vintage, when its acidity and fruit are most vibrant.
