Lalande-de-Pomerol is an appellation located on the Right Bank of Bordeaux, France, positioned directly north of the famous Pomerol appellation. The appellation was established in 1954 and covers approximately 1,100 hectares across two communes: Lalande-de-Pomerol and Néac. The vineyards sit on a plateau that extends the geological formations found in neighboring Pomerol.
The terroir consists primarily of gravel and sand soils with underlying clay, though it lacks the distinctive iron-rich crasse de fer layer that characterizes parts of Pomerol. The climate is oceanic with Atlantic influences moderating temperatures. Merlot dominates plantings, typically comprising 60-80% of vineyard area, with Cabernet Franc as the primary supporting variety and smaller amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon. The appellation produces exclusively red wines under AOC regulations.
Lalande-de-Pomerol wines typically display the approachable, fruit-forward character associated with Right Bank Bordeaux, though generally with less concentration than their Pomerol neighbors. The wines show ripe red and dark fruit flavors with soft tannins, making them accessible in their youth while still developing complexity with age. The Merlot-dominant blends tend to emphasize plushness and elegance rather than power, with Cabernet Franc adding structure and spice notes.
